Outdoor First Aid (2 day) Course Information

The Outdoor First Aid (2 day) course is very popular with anybody whose interest take them out into the hills and mountains, be it walking, climbing, biking, paragliding, horse riding or simply just enjoying them! This course is designed to give you the practical skills and knowledge to be more prepared should a first aid incident occur, especially if this happens to be in a remote area.

It involves 16 hours of tuition and includes an element of assessment. No previous first aid experience is required

The course is fully certified and recognised by most national governing bodies such as the MLT (ML, SPA, MIA, MIC, IML & BMG), BASI, BC and RYA.

Topics covered include:

➢ Role of the first aider, principles of first aid, equipment and prevention of cross-infection

➢ Assessments of situation and casualty

➢ Airway, breathing and circulation assessment

➢ Safe Airway Position and treatment of unconscious casualties (including seizures)

➢ Basic life support, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) including AED

➢ Choking

➢ Treatment of severe bleeding and shock

➢ Treatment of major injuries, head and chest

➢ Treatment of fractures, minor and major

➢ Common life threatening conditions including heart attack, asthma, diabetes, anaphylaxis, meningitis and sepsis

➢ Treatment of minor injuries, burns and scalds

➢ Hypothermia and Hyperthermia

➢ Management of emergency situations, including basic casualty movement

This course is of a very practical nature, with the minimum of medical jargon and terminology and will involve plenty of scenarios (both indoor and outdoor) with other candidates, each taking turns to be ‘casualty’ or ‘first aider’, so please make sure you come with appropriate clothing for both indoor and outdoor activities- including waterproof

The course can include the Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) at an extra cost of £4. Should you require this certificate, please state so at the time of booking.

In order to receive the certificate, you must attend the whole course and meet the required standard, so please ensure you arrive on time on both days. On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the REC Outdoor First Aid certificate (and the EFAW certificate if appropriate), valid for three years.

Course cost includes all training, course handbook, use of training materials, REC registration and certification, light refreshments throughout the day (though you will need to bring a packed lunch). This is a non-residential course; however details of local hotels can be forwarded to you on request.

The course begins at 9.00 am on both days and will finish at approximately 5.30 pm.


The course will be run at either the Locking Stumps Scout Centre, Birchwood, Warrington, Cheshire or the Risley Moss Local Nature Reserve near Warrington, Cheshire. Actual venue will be advised at the time of booking.

Please contact us (either before or on arrival) of any medical issues which may prohibit you taking part fully, or may jeopardise yourself or others – we like to keep our scenarios realistic, but not real!

Please note, Outdoor Approach reserve the right to cancel a course (i.e. in the case of the required attendance level being below six persons for example) up to 14 days from the due course date. If this occurs, all payments made to Outdoor Approach will be refunded or bookings transferred to an alternative course (should this be acceptable to the candidate).
