FAA Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (QCF)

It is a requirement of the Health & Safety law that employers provide a safe and healthy environment to work in. If your assessment of First Aid needs highlights the need for fully qualified first aiders, then this level 3 qualification (level 6 in Scotland) will provide you with suitable, highly trained personnel

This comprehensive course covers a wide range of first aid emergencies, enabling all participants to deal with emergency situations with confidence in a prompt, safe and effective way. In addition, this course will include for any protocol changes that may have arisen since their last training course.

This course will give the participants a qualification to the highest level of First Aid, meeting the statutory requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

The course involves a minimum of 18 hours of tuition over at least three days – ideally consecutive (it is however also possible to run the course in weekly two-hour evening sessions if this is more suitable). Assessment is ongoing by the instructor, along with a written assessment each day. No previous first aid experience is required. Students must be at least 14 year age to qualify (although they cannot assume workplace responsibility until 16).

Topics covered include:

  • The role of the first-aider including reference to available equipment, prevention of cross-infection and the need for recording incidents and actions. Assessments of the situation and the casualty.

  • Accident procedure enabling the first-aider to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency.

  • How to deal with an unconscious casualty (including seizures).

o Basic life support (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation- CPR).

o How to deal with a choking, bleeding or wounded casualty.

o How to administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock.

o Treatment of major injuries, head and chest

o Treatment of fractures, minor and major

o Common life threatening conditions including heart attack, stroke, asthma, anaphylaxis and diabetes

o Sprains and Strains

o How to provide appropriate first aid treatment for minor injuries.

  • Other topics can be added if time allows

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work certificate which is valid for three years.
